What we do?
Disability Support Services seeks to provide educational access and opportunity through support, resources, advocacy, collaboration, and academic accommodations for students with disabilities (as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973) who are accepted to the University.
Services provided to Faculty
- Consultation - DSS staff are ready to provide consultation should you have concerns about particular accommodations, are unsure how to implement an accommodation, or are in need of materials or equipment to work with students.
- Test Proctoring - The DSS Testing Center is provided to help faculty members respond to requests for extended time testing or a request for a distraction reduced testing environment. The testing center is located in the basement of Montgomery Hall. The process for using the testing center is as follows:
- Students will submit a web form requesting to test in the DSS testing center.
- Submission of the web form notifies both the instructor and the DSS testing center that a test request has been made.
- DSS staff works with the instructor to insure secure receipt of the test. Instructors may either: email, fax, or deliver the test to Montgomery Hall. DSS staff can arrange to pick up a test if necessary.
- Once a test is complete, it will be returned to the departmental main office.
- Notification: Each semester, students will notify instructors of a disability through an electronic notification letter sent via email. Accommodations for each student are listed on each instructor's class roster. To locate your class roster, log into your MyState account and click on the Banner Tab. Then click the "Class Roster" menu link under the Registration menu section under MyBanner For Faculty. Once in your class roster, click the link with the timestamp under the column "Disability Accommodations" to view a list of the accommodations.
Faculty Roles and Responsibilities
The number of students with disabilities attending postsecondary education continues to increase each year. Faculty and staff need to be well-informed about the roles, rights and responsibilities postsecondary institutions have towards support students with disabilities.

- Maintain Confidentiality
Confidentiality in the accommodation process must be maintained by all parties. Faculty should refrain from discussing students’ disabilities and necessary accommodations in the hearing of fellow students or others who do not have an "educational need to know".
While it is the instructor's responsibility to ensure that the learning environment is accessible, students must request accommodations. Instructors will find it useful to include a statement on their syllabus which directs students with disabilities about the steps they need to take to receive classroom accommodations.

Students with disabilities in need of accommodations to meet the expectations of this course are encouraged to bring this need to the attention of the instructor and should register with the Office of Student Support Services as soon as possible. Faculty members have the right to:
- Maintain academic standards for courses
- Determine course content and how it will be taught
- Confirm a student's request for accommodations and ask for clarification about a specific accommodation with Disability Services
- Deny a request for accommodation - if the student has not been approved for such accommodation
Faculty members do not have the right to:
- Refuse to provide an approved accommodation for a documented disability
- Challenge the legitimacy of a student's disability
- Review a student’s documentation, including diagnostic data
Faculty members have the responsibility to:
- Understand laws and university's guidelines regarding students with disabilities
- Refer students to Disability Support Services when necessary
- Provide requested accommodations and academic adjustments to students who have documented disabilities in a timely manner
- Maintain appropriate confidentiality of records concerning students with disabilities except when disclosure is required by law or authorized by the student
- Provide handouts, videos and other course materials in accessible formats upon request
